The War And Treaty Unveils "Love Like Whiskey" as Lead Single From New Album "Plus One"
The War And Treaty, consisting of husband-and-wife duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, have released their latest single, "Love Like Whiskey," as the opening track of their fourth full-length album, "Plus One," which debuted on February 14, 2025. This soul-stirring song delves into the complexities of enduring love, using the metaphor of whiskey to illustrate the sometimes burning, sometimes soothing nature of long-term relationships.
"Love Like Whiskey" showcases The War And Treaty's signature blend of country, soul, and gospel influences, a style that has earned them critical acclaim and a growing fanbase. The track features radiant guitar work and rousing horns, pushing the boundaries of traditional country music while staying true to the genre's storytelling roots.
Under the production guidance of Michael Trotter Jr. and Jesse Frasure, "Love Like Whiskey" emerges as a collaborative masterpiece, co-written with Tanya Trotter, Jesse Frasure, and Miranda Lambert. Though Lambert's songwriting influence resonates through the track's raw, relatable lyrics, she does not lend her vocals to the recording. The song's narrative unfolds through intimate details, with lines like "I've been sleeping on the couch all week / You ain't even talkin' to me" that authentically capture the challenges and endurance of lasting love.
In addition to "Love Like Whiskey," the album "Plus One" includes 17 other tracks that explore various facets of the Trotters' relationship and musical journey. Notable among these is "Drink From Me," a collaboration with acclaimed guitarist Billy Strings, and "Called You By Your Name," a song inspired by the Black gospel tradition of shout music.
The War And Treaty's musical background is as diverse as their sound. Michael Trotter Jr., an Iraq War veteran, taught himself to play piano while deployed, using music as a means of coping with the traumas of war. Tanya Trotter, on the other hand, had early success as a singer and actress in her teenage years. The couple met at a music festival in Maryland in 2010, and their personal and professional partnership has been flourishing ever since.
Their journey in the music industry has been marked by significant achievements. They've performed with artists ranging from Chris Stapleton to Al Green, and even shared the stage with the Rolling Stones. In 2023, they made history as the first Black duo to be nominated for both the Country Music Association Award for Duo of the Year and the Academy of Country Music Award for Duo of the Year.
As they continue to build on their already significant following in the country and Americana music scenes, The War And Treaty remain committed to creating music that bridges genres and touches hearts. With "Plus One," they aim to offer hope and inspire connection in a world that often feels divided.
