The artist has shared that the track's inspiration came following a writing session with his best friend, where both revealed they had been dealing with personal struggles in the wake of COVID-19, and how it became a matter of hanging on to or "leaning into" whatever they could to get through that time. Simpson explains "like an old chair, you don't know it will support you until you lean back," speaking openly about his internalised grief, clinging onto faith to help him cope, and why this track felt important to write.
Simpson's musical journey began as a way to cope with the loss of both his parents at a young age, turning to songwriting as an outlet for his grief.
